I decided to go to England at first primarily to attend the New Christian Music Awards Weekend to receive an award I won and to connect with people in music, arts and media ministries. I always want to take time to minister in music as many places as possible and encourage the church. I love to use these sorts of trips to give others opportunity too. I invited Danette Chappell (25) to come and play bass with me and to take photos and videos of the trip. I think she took about 2000 in all. Callie Evans (17) is the daughter of some good friends Sherry and Walt Evans who are ranchers in Southern New Mexico. Callie is a real cowgirl as she grew up on the ranch and knows the business. She went with us because she feels God has called her to Scotland. This would be another opportunity to get to know the British Isles. Danette and Callie traveling with me, made the whole trip SO much more fun. We all get along great. It's fun to watch them discover things here. They have made a fun video which is up on Danette's blog. www.DanetteChappell.com
After we landed at Heathrow airport we rented our car and headed to YWAM Harpenden which was about an hour away. Even though I got all the directions from Google Maps before we left, it was a little hard to find. I was concentrating very hard about how to drive on the left while Danette navigated. She did a great job. YWAM Harpenden is called "Highfield Oval". It was a large orphanage before it became YWAM UK's national headquarters. It was a great place to base out of.
We had a great time of fellowship and heard a lot of good and fun music at our first event. It was the New Christian Music Awards Weekend in Leighton Buzzard.
I also got to catch up with my old friend from Amsterdam days, Rita Pretorious from South Africa. On our first day off, Monday, we decided to drive over and see Oxford. We were fortunate that Rita had good friends that were attendig school in Oxford. Sarah and Tim showed us incredible hospitality, Tim gave us the "$100" tour of Oxford.
Tuesday night I led worship and spoke for the YWAM Harpenden weekly meeting. It was also DTS graduation. It's always so beautiful AND moving to hear the DTSers share their testimonies about how God has been changing their lives.
We moved from YWAM Harpenden to YWAM Holmstead Manor. Both bases are awesome! that old English class. Thursday was our first "see London" day. Friday we met up with my old friend Neil Leatherbarrow. Neil and his wife karen were once on MFM staff in Amsterdam before they joined the Steiger ministry. They now head up Steiger in London which is an outreach to youth. He booked us in a Christian highschool. Because of the good education, there are many Muslims who attend the school. It was a great opportunity to share the love of Christ. I let Danette and Callie share a lot there. The kids enjoyed Callies rope tricks too.
Saturday we spent down in Portmouth with my old friends from the Jesus movement days Ron and Marcie Matsen. Ron pastors Calvary Chapel Portsmouth. They gave us a grand tour of historic Portsmouth complete with a lunch of yorkshire pudding. I wonder if you know what that is. I had to learn. It's delicious!!!
Sunday it was back to London to do three services with Calvary Chapel Westminster with another Jesus Music friend Alwyn Wall. Malcom (Wild) and Alwyn were the "Simon & Garfunkle" of Christian music in the 70s & 80s. It was great to see a lot of diverse cultures in their congregation.
Our last day was another sightseeing trip to London visiting such places as Buckingham Palace, and Shurlock Holms museum. A special part for me was having dinner with another Amsterdam friend, Linda Patton. She has helped plant about 5 churches in London.
Tuesday... it was back to the airport to fly home.
I hope I don't wait another 20 years before I visit England again. There may be an opportunity to give a musicians seminar and be involved with musicians retreats there too. Thank You, Lord for keeping us safe. Lord willing.... we'll be back!! Pray for Callie as she seeks God about going to be a missionary in Scotland one day.
